Celebrate Symphonic Dance!
Saturday, September 24, 2011, 8pm
Celebrate Symphonic Dance on Saturday, September 24th at 8 PM begins with rich and romantic ballet music from Verdi’s operatic masterpiece, Aida. Brahms’s beloved orchestral setting of Hungarian dances surges with passionate movement. Malcolm Arnold captures the vigor and rhythmic energy of Scottish dances with his varied instrumentation. Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances follow, with their changing meter and shifting accents. Shimmering strings and haunting solo wind instruments rock the listener in the Berceuse from Stravinsky’s Firebird before the trumpet announces the dark and majestic Finale.
Edward German’s Henry VIII, Three Dances features colorful orchestration and melodies that evoke folk tunes of the British Isles. Johann Strauss’ gorgeous, romantic Emperor Waltz will challenge you to stay in your seat. You will leave humming the last piece on the program: Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours.
