"We wanted to put together a program of great music that reflects the vast and wide diversity of peoples and cultures that have made up and continue to make up our great country of America."

Our first Musicians Unleashed concert of this 2022-2023 season will feature music made in America.

Florence Price (1887-1953)

Florence Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was educated at the New England Conservatory of Music and was active in Chicago from 1927 until her death in 1953. We will hear her Juba from String Quartet No. 2

William Grant Still (1895-1978)

A student at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, William Grant Still Jr. was an American composer of nearly two hundred works, including five symphonies, four ballets, nine operas, more than thirty choral works, plus art songs, chamber music and works for solo instruments. We will hear his Danzas de Panama for string quartet.

Antonin Dvorák (1841-1904)

In 1892, Dvořák moved to the United States and became the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. While in the United States, Dvořák wrote his Symphony From the New World. In 1893, He moved to Spillville, Iowa, where he wrote his String Quartet in F major, later nicknamed the American Quartet. We will hear the first movement.
